Unclog the Drain

I was watching a show on the History Channel recently, called “101 Gadgets that Changed the World.”

It was an excellent show, and if you want to see the list for yourself, check out http://www.popularmechanics.com and look under “Technology/Gadgets.” However, it was their definition of a gadget that really caught my attention: A gadget is something that fits in your hand and solves a problem. I think that’s a perfect definition, and I’m pleased that these next items meet both criteria.

Zip-It Drain “Unclogger”
Diana Morris #94357 writes, “My husband and I have been traveling in our 26-foot class-C Born Free since 2004 on a part-time basis, but full-timing only since September 2008. We knew that it was a matter of time before one of the sinks became clogged. But leave it up to “Ace is the Place” in Forks, Washington. They came through for us with a handy, dandy Zip-It that unclogs your sink, shower and bathtub drains in seconds. Simply insert into drain and pull out slowly to remove hair and other debris.” It worked! So much so that my husband bought two more just to keep on hand for another such opportunity.”

You’ve got that right, Diana. I have carried a Zip-It in my RV for years, and it is absolutely the best gadget to use when a drain is clogged, especially when it’s the shower drain (hair). Just push the Zip-It down the drain, and it will pull out the most amazing (and scary) gobs of blockage you can imagine. Use it once and throw it away; they only cost about $3. Most hardware stores carry them, or purchase it online at Amazon.com.

Drain Screens
This next plumbing gadget must have been designed with RVers in mind. It is a little stainless steel screen that fits into your kitchen sink drain. It catches all the food particles and scraps that would normally go down the drain, and then you can just dump them in the trash. Works like a charm and will help prevent icky build-up in your grey-water tank and piping. You can find them at kitchen specialty shops, Walmart and hardware stores. It would be equally great for anyone who doesn’t have a garbage disposal in their kitchen sink at the house. Here’s a place to buy them online: www. plumbingsupply.com/stainlessscreenstrainers. html. Till next time, let it flow!
